Unfolding Edits

Training and editing for the publishing industry
We run editorial training for editors, literary agents and anyone else who edits books for a living.
We’re here to demystify the art of editing. We want to give everyone in the industry the tools and confidence to edit fiction and non-fiction for a general readership.
And we edit manuscripts in need of a fresh pair of eyes.
We take on a small number of fiction and non-fiction editing projects for publishers and literary agencies, and are always keen to turn those projects into training opportunities for junior staff members.

feedback from our training workshops
'I enjoyed every aspect of the sessions . . . Ana embraced all questions and comments, especially when we were uncertain of things. I would recommend her workshop to anyone new or just starting to edit fiction as it feels like I learned some good pointers and feel more confident in doing edits'
‘Ana is a brilliant teacher and so knowledgeable. I found the 3-step process for structural edits the most helpful, as this is an area that I’ve been struggling with and not sure if I’m doing it right.’
‘I think this training should be provided for all junior editorial staff . . . it is essential for us to have some guidance before embarking on edits with authors (for skills learned but also confidence).’
‘The workshops were incredibly interactive, which made me feel consistently engaged. I also felt like the sessions were accessible and made the idea of starting to edit books far less daunting as Ana gave us a structure to follow to carry out our shadow-edits.’
‘The absolute highlight for me was that it provided useful language and ways to speak about things that you feel instinctively but don’t necessarily know how to describe.’
‘The trainers were really great, encouraging and helpful. Prior to this training I felt intimidated by editing manuscripts but the trainers were very encouraging and I think having a set of practical tools /hacks has definitely helped me feel more prepared for editing non-fiction.’
‘Ana and Jack were both brilliant at explaining the ins and outs of what to keep in mind. I feel more confident approaching a non-fiction edit now, which was definitely my hope going into the session!’
‘I gained confidence to continue my own work and clarity on the practice of editing itself, confirming that what I had been instinctually doing is correct. Ana articulated what can be a very blurry and ad hoc process, and this was very, very helpful.’
‘All of the hacks, tips and tricks were all really clearly described, explained and exemplified. Nothing was unclear, it all felt really accessible!’
‘The “notice what you notice” outline was fantastic, and something I will come back to in every edit going forward. It was great to see the editorial letter examples and pick up some useful phrases there to communicate with authors, and I also found the editing we did on the sample passage useful.’
